What are B Corp™ businesses?

B Corp’s are companies that meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose.

B Corps have been independently assessed to ensure they meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. The certification process is rigorous and considers the impacts of a company’s decisions on society and the environment. It’s about growing a business in the right way and is the only certification that measures a company’s entire social and environmental performance.

B Corps are for-profit companies that use the power of business to build a more inclusive and sustainable economy. In 2021 we were the first innovation funding company in the UK to become Pending B Corp certified, joining a community that now includes over 3,500 businesses in 71 countries across the globe, covering 150 industries.

Want to know more? Let’s see how becoming B Corp effects our business day to day.

Our legal obligation.

Certifying as a B Corp means that we are legally and morally committed to prioritising our responsibility to the environment, society and our oceans. Our articles of association, registered at companies house, as of 2021 now reflect this. Whether it’s decisions about the services we offer, the people we employ, or the partners we work with, we legally have to prioritise the welfare of our people and our oceans, not just profits.

The marine sector is going through a huge change as we work towards Net Zero and develop decarbonising technologies. We work to use our business as a vehicle to work with other companies looking to have a positive impact on our oceans.

Not just a stamp of approval.

There are a lot of sustainability certifications out there, and it can often be confusing for consumers to discern which ones actually carry weight. As well as legally binding commitments to the environment and society, B Corp certified companies are continually re-assessed and are required to pass the re-certification process every 3 years.

This ensures that B Corps are always held to account – and enables us as an organisation to continually monitoring our impact to ensure we are improving the way we do business, for the benefit of people and planet.

Always have been, always will be.

Becoming B Corp certified was a proud moment for us. By joining a global movement of like-minded businesses pushing for change is empowering not only for our team and our clients, but for the marine sector as a whole. To have it acknowledged that our vision of increasing access to innovation funding for decarbonising technologies in the marine sector is incredibly empowering and we are excited to see what more we can achieve as a team in the future.

Being part of the B Corp community means we stand shoulder to shoulder with others who share our values; learning from each other and collaborating to reap the rewards of our shared expertise.

For all the team at Swell, this is just the beginning…
